It was announced earlier thatTrue Detective helmer Cary Fukunaga was co-writing and directing a feature film adaptation of Stephen King's IT with 23-year-old Will Poulter as the sinister clown Pennywise, but later left the project last May due to creative disputes. After months of rumors new producer Roy Lee expects production to begin later this year.

“It will hopefully be shooting later this year. We just got the California tax credit.” IT film producer, Roy Lee, told Collider at DICE 2016.

It was also confirmed that the original script from Cary Fukunaga and Chase Palmer was being rewritten by screenwriter Gary Doberman and the new director, Andy Muschietti.

Andy Muschietti is an Argentine filmmaker and producer who is best known for directing Guillermo del Toro’s Mama so he’s no stranger to horror.

As far as sticking closely to the novel, Lee has this to say “It is very close to the source material in one way but very different if you look at it as a literary piece of work,” Lee continued. “We’re taking it and making the movie from the point of view of the kids, and then making another movie from the point of view of the adults, that could potentially then be cut together like the novel. But it’s gonna be a really fun way of making this movie.”

The first adaptation of the novel was made into a 1990 miniseries with Tim Curry as Pennywise. Lee also went on to add that the film is expected to be given an R rating.
