The Primaries

Who? Anyone who is a South Carolina resident and is already, or will be, eighteen or older by November 8th, the general election day, will be allowed to vote in the primaries if they have registered to vote thirty days prior to the primary date.

What? “The “first-in-the-South” primary gives a voice to Southern states in the presidential nomination process. South Carolina often helps to begin significantly narrowing down the field of candidates following contests in Iowa and New Hampshire. Often South Carolina is considered the “tie-breaker” between Iowa and New Hampshire if the states differ on candidate selection. For example, in the 2012 cycle, all Iowa and New Hampshire split with Iowa selecting Rick Santorum, and New Hampshire selecting Mitt Romney. Interestingly, neither of those two candidates won South Carolina with that prize going to Newt Gingrich which served to bolster his campaign further into the primaries. South Carolina has a history of usually selecting the candidate who will go on to become the nominee. This was true in 1996, 2000, and 2008. However, 2012 broke that streak when Newt Gingrich did not get much further than South Carolina, in terms of primary victories.” ( http://www.uspresidentialelectionnews.com/2016-presidential-primary-schedule-calendar/2016-south-carolina-primary/ )

When? In South Carolina Democrats and Republicans vote on different days. Polling places will be open from 7am to 7 pm on both primary election dates. Everyone in line by 7pm will be allowed to vote.

Democratic Primary: February 27, 2016

Republican Primary: February 20, 2016

Why? You should vote so that you have a say on who is elected president. Many people say “oh I will wait till the general election because that's when my vote counts.” No! Your vote counts now! You can influence who gets chosen as the nominee. “But I am just one person my vote doesn’t really matter.” Yes it does! Your vote matters, you could be the one point could that makes the difference between a tie and a win. You could be that tie breaker! You have a say in who gets elected president so please use it. Also, it is your democratic right to vote who our new leaders are. Other countires, like North Korea and Communist China, don't have that same right and are forced to live under harsh rulers. Please go out and vote and if you haven’t registered already make sure you do before the general election date (November 8th, 2016) so that you can have a say in who the next president of the United States is!
